What rendering involves

Render does two jobs at once: it keeps weather off the masonry behind it and it changes how the whole house looks. Which system suits depends on what's underneath. Traditional sand and cement is hard-wearing and cost-effective, but it's rigid, so on a wall that moves it can craze and crack over time.

Silicone and other thin-coat systems go on over a basecoat and mesh, and come through-coloured, so there's no repainting every few years and small movement doesn't show the same way. They're breathable too, which matters on older solid-wall properties where trapping moisture in causes more problems than it solves.

Preparation is most of the job either way. Old failed render has to come off rather than be covered over, beads need to be set true or every edge will show it, and the wall needs to be sound before anything goes on it.

Questions we get asked

Silicone or sand and cement?

Sand and cement costs less up front and is tough. Silicone is breathable, through-coloured so it never needs painting, and copes better with movement. We will tell you which suits your wall rather than pushing one.

Can you render over existing render?

Sometimes, if what is there is sound and well keyed. If it is blown, hollow-sounding or cracked, covering it just hides a problem that will come back through. We will tap it and tell you honestly.

Will it stop damp?

Render sheds rainwater, which helps a lot with penetrating damp. It will not fix rising damp or a leak, and on an older solid wall the wrong non-breathable system can make things worse. Worth getting the cause diagnosed first.

Does weather affect when you can do it?

Yes. Render should not go on in a hard frost or in strong direct heat, so winter and heatwave work sometimes has to wait for a suitable window. We will be upfront about timing.
