Brickwork is one of the few trades where the quality is permanently on show. Courses that run out of level, inconsistent joints or pointing that's been rushed will be visible for as long as the wall stands, so the setting out at the start matters more than the speed at the end.
Structural work — piers, supporting walls, openings within existing brickwork — gets built to the specification the job needs, with the right lintels and proper support while it's going in. Garden and boundary walls need foundations sized for the height, movement joints where the run is long, and a coping detail that keeps water off the top.
Repointing older brickwork is its own job: the failed mortar gets raked out to a proper depth and replaced with a mix suited to the brick, rather than something harder that traps moisture and damages the face.
Questions we get asked
Does a garden wall need foundations?
Anything more than a low decorative course does, yes. A wall built straight onto the ground will move and crack within a few winters. Depth depends on the height and the ground it is going into.
How do I know if mine needs repointing?
If the mortar is crumbling, sitting back from the brick face, or you can rake it out with a screwdriver, it is due. Left long enough the water gets behind the brick and the damage stops being cosmetic.
Do you do small brickwork jobs?
Yes — a rebuilt pier, a section of wall taken down and rebuilt, an opening bricked up. Describe it on the quote form and we will come back either way.
