What plastering actually involves

Most jobs fall into one of two camps. If the existing plaster is sound, we skim over the top — a couple of thin coats of finish plaster, trowelled up to a flat surface that's ready for paint once it's dried out. If the plaster has blown, is damp-damaged, or the walls have been stripped back to brick, it needs backing coat first to build the surface up, then skimming over that.

New stud walls and ceilings get plasterboarded, taped and skimmed. Where a room has had building work done, the join between old and new is usually the bit that shows, so that's where the care goes.

Small repairs are worth doing properly too — a patched corner or a filled-in doorway that's been feathered out badly will still be visible under emulsion.

Questions we get asked

How long before I can paint it?

Fresh plaster needs to dry out fully first — it goes from dark brown to a light, even pink. How long depends on the weather, the room and how thick the coats are, so we'll tell you what to expect on the day rather than guess here.

Can you skim over artex?

Usually yes. Depending on the depth of the pattern it either gets skimmed straight over or boarded first. Older artex can contain asbestos, so if there's any doubt it wants testing before anything is disturbed.

Do I need to move everything out?

Ideally the room is clear, but we'll work around what can't be moved and sheet it up. Floors get covered as standard and we clear up at the end of each day.

Is a small job worth calling about?

Yes. A patched wall or a single ceiling is fine — describe it on the quote form and we'll come back to you either way.
